What are they?
Spider mites are tiny pests that pose large problems for gardeners. A member of the arachnid family (spiders), the damage spider mites leave behind is typically seen before anyone spots the spider mite itself, mainly because they are so tiny. Typically they are found on the underside of leaves when plants become infested with them. Like their cousins, spider mites do often create webbing, particularly in large groups. Compared to the size of a pencil dot, these critters will eat just about anything from vegetables to flowers to spruce trees.
What is the damage?
When spider mites feed on plants, they do so by piercing plant cells and sucking out the sap on the inside, producing a spotted look on leaves. Eventually, the plant will take on a bronze color or will pale as the cells continue to be penetrated. Leaves will also have a tendency to drop much sooner than normal. In any case, spider mites have the potential to seriously weaken a plant if not kill the plant. Spider mites and their damage usually peak during hot, dry weather.

What can you do?
One of the easiest ways to get rid of spider mites is to use water. Using a hose, blast the plant with a strong jet of water to knock off the mites. This technique is referred to as “syringing”. Another method to consider is dousing the plant with insecticidal soap. Coating both the top and bottom of the leaves until they drip will kill the spider mites. The best way to practice prevention of spider mites is to keep all your plants and flowers well watered. The water will keep the plant healthy and less susceptible in case an infestation of spider mites occurs. It will also help to knock off the mites and reduce formation of eggs and webs.
