Drought Tolerant Plants
We are starting to get into the time of the year when rain can sometimes be little and far between and the sun is extremely hot. In the case of perennials, there are many that are designed for those hot, dry, summer days and thrive in the heat. Some have long roots that tap deep into the cool ground finding additional moisture while others have waxy, succulent-like leaves that are better adapted to holding water. Keep in mind that perennials will still need to be watered on a routine basis if they are recently planted. Once they are established, watering is often only necessary during long stretches of drought. Be sure to keep an eye on wilting plants!
There are also many annuals that are sun lovers as well. Compared to cool season annuals, there are many annuals that grow larger and bloom more abundantly during the months of July and August. Though annuals will still require regular watering, there are many annuals that will bounce-back from summer wilting with more ease than others. If you are looking for some of these plants that can stand up to the heat throughout the summer, then we have some old favorites, and possibly some new ones, to recommend.
