USDA Hardiness Zones
It is a known fact that winters can be hard in the Tri-State area.  Snow, ice, and cold temperatures can take a toll on plants throughout the winter.  For most home owners and garden enthusiasts, it is not difficult to keep shrubs and other perennials alive from year to year.  For new to gardeners or those looking to revamp or renovate an existing landscape or garden, it is important to consider the winter temperatures in terms of the USDA Hardiness Zone Map, as pictured below, when selecting new plants.

The map is easy to read.  Locate your area and match that color with the zone number.  Most of Ohio is located in zones 5-6 with Cincinnati falling close to the border of zone 6a.  If the tag indicates that the plant will survive in zone 4-9, that means it will survive in zones 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.  In summary, it is best to purchase plants that will survive in zones 5 and up (erring on the side of caution).  The zones are found on tags of most shrubs and perennials.  If you have any problems locating the zone, ask a Delhi employee for assistance.  Most of the perennials, shrubs and trees sold at area garden centers and at Delhi Garden Centers are able to withstand the cold winters of at least zone 5.
