DECEMBER

Reset any perennials heaved up by freeze & thaw cycles
Check young trees & shrubs for damage by deer or rodents – wrap trunks & apply
deterrents to protect from further damage
Spray an anti-desiccant such as Wilt-Pruf on both broadleaf & needle evergreens to
reduce moisture loss due to winter winds
If not already done, remove garden hoses, drain & put into storage. Turn off water to the
spigot in advance of winter freezes

JANUARY

Gather information & create a ‘wish list’
Reseat any perennials heaved up by freeze & thaw cycles

FEBRUARY – If weather permits

Remove leaves or other winter debris & clean up beds
Cut back any perennials not done in fall
Remove dead canes from roses but do not prune yet
Apply 2-3” of mulch in beds or around trees
Apply a balanced organic fertilizer
Apply pre-emergent herbicide to reduce spring germinating weeds
Reseat any perennials heaved up by freeze & thaw cycles
